Some modern engines use a wet timing belt that runs inside the engine, submerged in oil for lubrication and efficiency 🛢️ great in theory, but not without downsides.
✨ Why manufacturers use them:
• Reduced friction & noise
• Slight efficiency gains
• Cleaner running design
🔧 Reality in the real world:
Over time, wet belts can degrade faster than expected due to heat and oil exposure, and bits of belt can shed into the oil, potentially clogging oil pumps or galleries.
And it’s not just maintenance:
✔️ Time alone can cause wear even if the car is low-mile
✔️ Some designs have shown premature failures in service
✔️ Access for inspection and replacement is more complex than with a regular belt
Common on engines from brands like Ford, PSA (Peugeot/Citroën), VW and others, problems have been experienced even with full service history.
We inspect, maintain and replace wet timing belt systems to manufacturer standards 🔧
